Lizards are a category of reptiles. There skin type is very dry and hard. There are about approximately 6000 species of lizards. Many lizards live on the ground but some live in trees and some are burrower. Lizards usually eat insects and other small animals but some lizards like monitors, can hunt prey as large as deer and some feed on plants. Below I have listed some types of lizards.
Bengal Indian Monitor:
Bengal monitors are found in over the Indian subcontinent. Bengal monitor lizard is the most common lizards in India. They are carnivorous creatures but are non poisonous. They are also scavengers They sometimes feed on dead animals. Bengal Indian Monitor will not attack unprovoked. Males are generally larger than females.
Green Iguanas:
The best-known species of iguana is the common, or green, iguana , which occurs from Mexico southward to Brazil. Green or common iguanas are largest lizards in America. They are herbivorous meaning they eat plants. Iguanas are not dangerous to humans. Iguanas are certainly one of the most popular reptile pets. Iguanas are probably the most intelligent of all reptiles and the recognize their owners and family.
Mexican Beaded Lizard:
Mexican beaded lizard is mainly found in Mexico from Sonora to the pacific coast and into Guatemala. Average life span of Mexican beaded lizard is 30 years. Mexican beaded lizard is venomous lizard. They possess venom glands in their lower jaws. There bite can cause some serious problems to humans. Lizards bite with teeth rather than fangs.
Komodo Dragon:
The Komodo dragon is the largest living lizard species. The world’s largest lizards, they are believed to be the last survivors of the giant lizards that meandered through Australia millions of years ago. Komodo dragons are mainly found in Indonesia. Komodo dragons are carnivorous creatures. Komodo dragons are heaviest lizard on earth. They are fierce hunters they can eat very large prey such as buffalo and deer. Komodo dragons have shark-like teeth and poisonous venom that can kill a person within hours of a bite. Komodo dragons have been responsible for several human fatalities, in both the wild and in captivity.
Asian water monitor:
Asian water monitor is a large lizard mainly found in South and South east Asia. They are carnivores, and consume a wide range of prey. They are known to eat fish, frogs, rodents, birds, crabs, and snakes. Monitor lizards do secrete venom, it is not fatal to humans. The main cause for concern would be bacterial infection from the bite. They have a long tail which may compromise over half their body length. It is also used for defense.
Common Leopard Gecko:
Common leopard gecko is mainly found in the regions of Afghanistan, Iran, India and Nepal. Leopard gecko are carnivore and only eat insects. A leopard gecko’s body can only digest meat. Leopard Geckos are not poisonous. In fact Leopard geckos are docile and easy to tame. So they can be kept as reptile pet.
Sand Lizard:
Sand lizards are one of the most rarest reptiles found in United kingdom (UK). Sand lizard is carnivore, whose diet is mostly restricted to invertebrates. The sand lizard is considered to be an animal at threat from extinction in the wild and is protected in much of its natural range.
Gila Monster:
Gila monster lizard native to the South western United States and the northwestern Mexican States. The Gila monster is the only venomous lizard native to United States. Gila Monster is a carnivore (meat-eater). It eats small mammals (like rats and mice), birds, lizards, frogs, and eggs. A Gila monster bite is painful to humans, but it rarely causes death. The Gila monster is one of only a handful of venomous lizards in the world.
